During the fall of 1990, the Deputy Chief of the fire department, Herb Gandee, started Clayton County Fire Department’s Explorer Post 601. The Explorer Post began with only eight members, yet quickly doubled during the first year.

A board of advisors was established to govern the operations of the post through making rules, researching legalities, as well as, assuring a successful program.

When Deputy Chief Gandee retired in 1993, Deputy Chief Jerry Neal filled the role as Chief Administrator of the Explorer program for the next 4 years.
There has been a multitude of dedicated Clayton County Firefighters and their spouses who have contributed to the post in various ways. The investment of time and  energy from many individuals over the past 18 years to help in the development of Clayton County Fire Department’s Explorer Post 601 has contributed to making Clayton County’s Explorer Post 601 one of the most successful programs around.

Today, Clayton County Fire & Emergency Services is dedicated to starting a new
 firefighter Explorer Post 701.
